The Hillside Coffee Bar
At Hillside High School every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at the student’s store students and staff are able to purchase or order coffee, and other drinks, as well as snacks through a provided google form. The coffee bar is open from 10-12 a.m.. Which is during second period for students. The coffee bar is run by the special population autism class along with a few staff members who prepare, deliver, and serve the coffee and other beverages.
The coffee bar was established in order to give the students in the special population autism class a chance to interact with students and staff outside their class, have some time out of class, and to gain some working experience. The overall goal of the coffee bar is to give each student a chance to learn work ethic and social skills to use in the future. Ms.Carey says she can see that the coffee bar has definitely been a great help in reaching each of these goals and she hopes this experience can make an everlasting change for her students.
Ms.Carey also shared that there’s a cafe quite similar to the coffee bar here at hillside called 321 coffee. There’s three different locations with one of them being here Downtown Durham, and the others in Raleigh, NC.
